CNET News took its time to write an article on the Woz cutting in line at an Apple store to get a 3G iPhone. Is this really a needed story? Don’t they have anything better to write about? Don’t the folks that reported this to CNET have better things to do, or were they just in it for their 15 minutes of fame?
I have to say that even me writing this little rant about is probably too much, but the story headline caught my eye and I took wasted my time to read it. If you want to do the same please click through to the article below.
Below is a good YouTube video about whether Microsoft ripped off Apple in making Vista. It’s hilarious, sarcastic and could be taken to be very true. While I’m a Windows/Microsoft user 99% of the time, I’ve got to agree that Vista smacks of OS X in just about every way, except UAC that is.
I have 1 system with Vista on it, 2 with XP SP2, 1 with OS X Tiger, one oldie iMac with OS 9.2.2 and 1 with Ubuntu 7.04. At work we have no Vista systems and we won’t switch until sometime in 2008 at the earliest. After testing Vista since beta 1 I’ve not seen anything that makes me want to upgrade any system at work or for a client in my consulting for the price Microsoft is asking for Vista.
Everything that Vista can do, I can do with XP with either free programs or with other applications, which combined cost less than Vista Home or Premium. So why upgrade? Stay tuned for an installment in the near future in which I will show you just that. “How to make your Windows XP do what Vista does.”
InformationWeek is running an article about 9 different smartphones that are cheaper than the iPhone and can run on more than the AT&T network or the AT&T high speed network. Hum, there are even 2 Blackberries that are only $150-$300 plus cheaper network contracts.
One of the pluses to these alternatives is that they can run 3rd party business applications and they can run Flash, Java, Windows Media Player, Real Player and do Instant Messaging.Without them, the iPhone just another phone.
Now I know a lot of people want to be the first to have an iPhone, like the Mayor of Philly who waited in line from 3:30am to buy one. Of course he did all his Mayoral duties while in line with his BlackBerry and actually left twice to give speeches, leaving a city employee to keep his place. We’ll give those 20 percent of the people the benefit of working out the iPhone bugs for the rest of us.
Here is why you should wait up to six months to buy an iPhone:
Apple rushes products out the door without proper testing. The first buyers are beta testers that are paying to test the product.
A slow network, Apple decided not to support AT&T’s UMTS-HSDPA 3G network, and will use AT&T’s EDGE network. Why have the great web features, then cripple them with a slow connection.
No Business applications, although you can read Word and Excel files you cannot edit them. You get more business app’s with the Blackberry.
Can’t change the battery without sending it to a dealer. This is one of those iAnything problems that everything is just packed into the box.
No Java, Windows Media Player, Real Player, and Flash Video support for Safari make the browsing experience sorely lacking.
For all those reasons and more that I haven’t seen or heard about, I would wait at least 6 months to get an iPhone.
