SigmaTel Drivers & Vista Part II

Update 2/8/07: In a new post “SigmaTel and PC Manufacturers” I’ve linked to the 3 biggest manufacturers that have Vista drivers for the SigmaTel audio codecs.

Update 11/23/06: I’ve complied the solutions from comments to this and part 1 in my lastest post: SigmaTel Solutions Part 3

My original post on the installation the SigmaTel audio drivers in Vista and its comments have sparked a major increase in hits on this blog. It seems that this is a major issue for a lot of us, so much so that I went to the SigmaTel site to see if they had anything on the installation problem. What I found, were two press releases from May & June that express the opinion that the SigmaTel drivers will:

Be fully supporting the upcoming Microsoft Vista premium logo program which requires 4-channel CODECs for two separate capture and render scenarios. (Emphasis Added)

So, if I’m reading these releases correctly then the final release of Vista will include these drivers. This would and should be a major issue for Microsoft and SigmaTel seeing that so many people are concerned about it.

Remember to follow these steps in trying to get your drivers to work:

  1. Do a Windows Update even after Vista has does one during install.
  2. Uninstall the drivers and let Vista try to reinstall them for you.
  3. Uninstall and reinstall your XP drivers from your XP CD or download them from your PC vendors support site.

That’s what I think….What about you?

    Motherboard Intel D945GPM.
    OS: Windows Vista.
    Sound Sigmatel does not function.
    Sigmatel does not give drivers.
    Bad, bad, bad.
    Thanks.

  2. Ray says:

Did you try #3? SigmaTel does not have drivers on their site. You need to go to your PC Vendor, Dell, Gateway, HP, etc.

    Ray

  3. David says:

For an Intel motherboard goto the Intel site and under the download section select your motherboard.

For my Intel mobo (different to yours) the latest Sigmatel driver is dated 8/8/2006

  4. Joseph says:

i tried all of them. The problem is…sound is crackling… something is wrong with the sound that comes out. The sound is not clear. Can you help me? im using a dp965lt intel board with SigmaTel HD audio, win vista rc1.

  5. Sugato says:

Same problem as above. Only thing that works is the default “HD Audio” driver that comes with MS Vista. Sound is good, but only in stereo and no mic input.

  6. Saptarshi says:

I have the same problem as above. Motherboard: Intel DG965RY.
With the default Vista RTM driver (High Definition Audio Device), the rear mic doesnt work. When I load the Sigmatel 92xx driver from Intel’s site the sound is crackling and not audible..

Has anybody figured out a solution?? or has any1 got the (IDT – they own sigmatel’s division now) IDT HD codec drivers which they have supposedly released to OEMs…

  7. rimakus says:

Same problem with D945PVS. Sound is crackling with current drivers from intel website.

  8. Peter says:

Same for Intel 945GNT, tried all sorts of drivers, no go

Snap, Crackle Pop, should be in the cerial business :)

Nothing works from Intel yet, no fix found

MS HD Audio works but no front mike or Headphones and no rear audio

  9. Dennis Poehls says:

I have similar problems. In my case, I hear sound, some of it pretty good, but it almost seems like a channel of sound is missing. Like I can hear the MUSIC on a video but I can BARELY hear the dialog and what I CAN hear of it is garbled and unintelligible. I have tried installing and uninstalling, sometimes I see things like an equalizer, etc. when I click on Properties of Speakers in Control Panel. I have tried just about everything I know to get the thing to work. Sometimes when I uninstall and re-install, it seems like it does not install everything needed…weird. I have a Dell desktop (5510) with Intel board.

  10. jac says:

Same problem here Intel D945GTP, it sees the mic, and the audio meter will move but no sound comes out. It sucks

  11. Ron says:

I am using Windows XP SP2 and am having a problem exactly like the one Dennis described. It is as if a center channel is missing. The problem only is evident when listening to a source in Dolby Digital Sound. An excellent example is the Collectors Series edition DVD of “Shakespeare in Love.”

My motherboard is an Intel Bad Axe 2. I have done a lot of fiddling and just cannot get the thing to work correctly. My speaker system is a 2.1 and my hunch is that even with the control panel set to stereo that the drivers are sending some of the channels to a non-existent speaker.

  12. Ron says:

    Fixed!

On Intel’s website there are a bunch of different downloads. The drivers are all the same, but you have a choice of the driver interface. I had originally downloaded the Sigmatel interface. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled with the Sigmatel interface and it did not help. Then I uninstalled the drivers and installed with the Intel interface. The Intel interface — Intel Audio Studio — under SETUP has different kids of Digital Output Format you can select. I put in Shakespeare in Love and started randomly trying the choices; ADAT worked. Problem fixed. Hope this helps someone.

I am trying to install SigmaTel Audio drivers for IMAC 20′ running Windows but it isn’
t supported. What the hell shoould I do?

  15. Andrew says:

I have problems with the sound crackling on my PC as well. I’m running a Dell XPS laptop, and when I called Dell, they said there wasn’t a fix for my issue yet. I’m not sure if it’s the same problem on the computers mentioned before, but they said there was an issue with Vista between my wireless card and my sound card that was not there when I was running XP. Dell said they would call with an update as to the fix, but I have not yet received anything, but it may be worth looking into on your computers if you have wireless.

  16. usman riaz says:

yeah i hav also facin the same prob…after the installation of vista bus. edition when i’ve tried to install the drivers for the chipset..my os begin complainin that “os is not able to find a digital signature”
    so whatz this..

  17. Ray says:

    Andrew,

I wouldn’t believe the Dell Support on this one. I’m using a Dell Inspiron E1505 and have no problems with the SigmaTel driver, having installed the latest drive from 1/30/07. I was told by the Vista install that I might have a problem with the wireless, but haven’t had one. There was an update for the wireless card as well on the Dell site.

  18. Michael says:

Hi all, have been struggling with this audio problem and from three days of time waste and motherboard changed from 965SS to 965RY(well even the computer shop guys had no idea what was wrong so they just tried their luck) no luck, then I read a long article in Intel which clearly states Does not support Win 95, Win 98, 98 SE, 2000 :( (Even in the CD there is a long damn Readme.txt file stating the same… The drivers for one are crap I guess… If u actually browse thru ur motherboard CD u get folders with various options saying Win2k drivers and that too in a particular order(like as if it is going to work or make any difference)tried that too but no use… Intel themselves are contradicting and recontradicting themselves… Everything is not sure to them!! Nor us!!?? Trying to make us Mental I guess :D Well Im sure umpteen number of u’ll will be having problem with the front panel audio not working!! I guess Microsoft and Intel have teamed and planned to make only VISTA PCs not even XP is supported properly that too with the 32-bit 64-bit compatibility crap to add to the nonsense… For a fact, something isnt right and it isnt fun for anyone thinking they’re upgrading when they have a PC that costs much more claiming great things when it doesnt support something as basic as audio.. I wonder how a motherboard can be given with no support for OS’s that are still in use… If that was the case, it should have been done or given with support for drivers which make the motherboard useful rather on older OS’s than making us search around the net like hound dogs hounding on something that isnt really there looking for options on a 72 page read through!!! Damn am I pissed!! My 865 chipset motherboard is a thousand times better utility wise I guess except for the 2 RAM slots, for that can get 2 1GB RAMs and put… Im sure even all of u will be feeling the same amount of disgust and frustration wondering why the hell sound aint working.. That too having audio jacks in front panel without any use!!! Im sure a solution to this issue will be hard to find unless someone plans of meddling with the mic soldering the front port wires to the back!!! I’ve read not experienced that too only temporary solutions which get back to on the next startup… I’ll keep trying and fiddling around with the drivers and downloads for now and the umpteen number of printouts to read, while u’ll too try ur best.. It will definitely be appreciated if some computer nerd or genius out there solves this issue and posts it for the helpless folks out here (US!!!) Thanks god bless the soul that finds a true solution to this…

  19. Michael says:

Oh by the way.. pls read the readme file and also the intelwebsite support regarding the crackle and pops!!! Cereal killers!!!

  20. sinik says:

got the same problem with Sugato (#5). no rear or front mic, and just stereo sound…. with my old OS (XP) , there were no problem with that… windows update tried to release a driver update for sigmatel HD, but when i install it, there’s no sound and no mic…. can someone fix this please??? very unpleasant… can’t use skype, can’t talk with anybody, can record anything…

  21. Edward says:

    Intel board D945GTP with a D930 processor.
    Windows Vista 32 bit.
Sound jacks on rear panel work right after Vista is installed.
Front panel jacks are not seem by the system.
Update (optional) from Windows update makes things worse and all sound devices disapeared.
Back up to original installed drivers, sound devices are back, then update drivers from Intel site brings a screen (ugly one with no options or settiings, what is this junk?) that shows the fron panel jacks but then only the front headphone jack works, badly, cracked sound. Still no mike on front jack.
    What a garbage!
Everything used to work fine on XP 32bit SP2 with the latest drivers from Intel, Sigmatel interface (the ugly one too, but anyway the drivers were good).
This is not a Vista upgrade, it’s full install from scratch, released version.

  22. Pdinc says:

I had the same problem with my Intel D975XBX2KR. I installed the audio drivers from Intel’s site, which worked fine except my center/sub channel was not detected. Intel released a new update on their site (dated end of march) that solved this problem for me. Sound is good quality, however, without Intel audio studio i am limited to stereo sound for my music.

  23. Minor Geek says:

I have an Intel D965ss mobo. Microphone not working in front jacks. Have tried almost everything apart from throwing it out of the window. Sigma Tel driver seems bad. Latest driver installed (3 times). Have checked mic is on and recognised, but still no mic. This is not what you’d expect from an outfit like Intel. From the blogs I’ve read all over the web about this, it looks like Intel/Sigma Tel have screwed up big time. If it’s Vista then where’s the update. If it’s the driver, where’s the update. If it’s the mobo it’s out the window. I’ll buy a mac next time for sure.

  24. Ray says:

    MG,

You are posting here in part 2 and I have 2 more posts on this subject. The last one points to all the major makers and the latest drivers. Did you read them and try them? The other posts also have comments from others that have had luck with solutions.

    Ray

  25. Val says:

Exactly the same problem with DG965SS. How difficult can it be to port an XP driver to Vista? This is just screwed up.

  26. Ray says:

    Val,
I’m sorry, but I can’t feel sorry for you just complaining. If you would go to the updated post, through the links that I placed at the top of this post, you maybe would have found your drivers. Many others have and have solved their problem.

It took me 15 minutes total time to find the 3 main links in that post and investigate that they were up to date drivers. To top it all off, I just went to the sites and typed in “Sigmatel driver Vista” and got results right away.
It’s not hard if you try a little.

    Ray

  27. Val says:

Ok, I am not stupid. I have tried all those things by myself several times already. I have used Windows Update, newest Drivers and everything. In some cases nothing works, in some cases only the back ports, in some cases everything BUT the front mic. The front mic just doesn’t work. With NONE of your solutions. So it might be hard even if you try a little.

  28. Ray says:

    Val,

I searched the comments for all 4 of my posts and found this:

1.Right click on the speaker icon, select Playback Devices.
2.Click Speakers one time (should say something like SigmaTel Audio CODEC Working).
3.Click on properties, go to Levels tab.
    4.Click on Input Monitor.
Your input is enabled, then just go to Recording tab and select as default the input you’re

going to use (line in, microphone, rear mic)

Let us know if it works. I knew someone had worked out an issue with the Mic’s.

    Ray

  29. Val says:

Thanks for your hints. I have tried this before and I have just retried that. On activating Input Monitor I hear a background noise in the headphones, but the microphone still doesn’t work, whether I select Front Mic or Front Mic (Monitor). Rear Mic works as expected, but it is the front one I need. For XP there were two drivers one for AC’97 Frontpanel connector and one for the HD Frontpanel connector. Now its just one, so I suppose they didn’t do it for the AC’97 connector and hence the mic doesn’t work… But thats just a hunch.

  30. Ray says:

    Val,

I found an updated AC97 driver dated May 17th….It might work:

Anyone that is trying to get their intel sigmatel sound to work on vista . Their is a driver that does work from dell (file name R157052) .My board is Intel D945PWM

  33. kevin_robinson says:

I have had trouble with my microphone suddenly stopped working and then became unpredictable and temperamental.
Tried all the driver fixes. Uninstall Sigma reinstall etc. Sometimes worked sometimes not. No knowing.
Fixed: note that the microphone socket is very slightly recessed in cabinet of Dell Inspiron 1501. My microphone plug was too deeply shrouded in plastic sleeve. Judiciously removed small sliver from soft plastic sleeve on the Microphone plug with sharp knife. Presto all fixed now!

  34. Jebarson says:

I have the problem of the front panel mic is not working with 965RY motherboard and it is also not supporting 5.1 audio on Windows Vista Ultimate – 64x. I am really pissed of. Let me wait for the reply on this from Intel. Hope, they can provide me some solution

  35. David says:

I tried R157052, sound is ok. But nothing works out for the MIC. I see the sound level of mic go up and down when talking, but nothing comes back. In the playback tab/levels tab, I got no option to playback Microphone.

I’m also pissed of, please let me know if you get anything from Intel or Sygmatel

  36. Laura says:

I am having the same exact problem as all of you on a 3 month old Dell Dimension C521 w/ Vista. The sound just quit working saying no audio device installed. Well, after going rounds with Dell Tech support, they are now saying they are going to put in a new motherboard… but, from the posts I see that is not going to work either. Has ANYONE found a fix for this anywhere? Sigmatel offers NO downloads nor have I found one anywhere to fix it. Please help as I just don’t know what to do anymore.

  37. Wally says:

I just bought a new Gateway Core 2 Quad and am having the crackling problem with Sigmatel. It only happens for 2 – 4 seconds per song and it also seems like the song slows down during that period of time. I have the latest driver (or so they say),any suggestions?

  38. Wally says:

    Hey Ray,

Thanks for the quick response. I’ve already been there and had the latest driver already installed. I downloaded and ran the driver install anyway and have the same problem. it happens on MP3, MP4, WAV, Home Movies, DVDs, etc… Doesnt matter if I have speakers connected to the back or the front port or if I use headphones. I’m possibly going to purchase a new sound card since I’m frustrated unless you have any other advice. appreciate any other help or ideas you might have.

  39. Ray says:

    Wally,

Intermittent errors are the hardest to diagnose. Most of the time it’s software in conjunction with other software. Before you buy a new sound card start by removing start up items via msconfig or Sysinternals autoruns from Windows Sysinternals Click her to get.

I remove one item at a time until I get the problem to go away. Remember that last one and leave it out while you start adding the others back in one at a time until you have them back in and no problem.

Do that first, then if that doesn’t fix the problem go buy a new sound card.

    Ray

  40. Paul Rowell says:

I had jerkiness in sound on my (Vista) DELL pc with sigmaTel drivers. I fixed it by going to the properties page of the Sound/Playback/Speakers/Headphones and disabling all enhancements on the Enhancements Tab – no enhancements were enabled but there is a tick box to disable them which wasn’t selected.

  41. Michael Nederlander says:

Vista is still missing the MIXER. I have browsed a lot of sites but it seems the manufacturers of both Intel and MS will not put any effort in creating a proper driver for the Sigmatel on my Intel 975BX (not the bx2) :( I can play sound, use my mic but at times its cracks and as I said NO mixer for me to play music over the internet in other programs (such as paltalk) I don’t get it because in XP Pro it works all like a charm. Why are Intel and Microsoft so NON-SUPPORTIVE ? Anyone have a working solution? I am all ears. TNX Michael

I’m have to say i am amazed how dip the problem with this chips go lol.

    here’s mine
    dell precsion m90 winxp
    sigmatel stac92xx c-major hd audio
    nividia quadro 512mb fx2500m
    intel core 2 duo
    1gb ram

first whenever i get on a online program other then the internet i get a buzzing sound and does not stop but if i install a new program at random it may or may not stop for a little while.
second nascar racing 2003 i love my racing and the program is struggling on this monster of a laptop.
the menu is choppy and repeats clicking sounds when i hit any button. ingame is awesome looks and runs great if i change the processor affinity to 0. all sounds are fine except the engines they sound like lawnmowers and are just idle are all out no inbetween and ofcourse it’s not suppose to be this way:(.

ok what i’ve tryed i have gone all over the internet about this freaking chip this probably my 10th post about it. nobody can help and anything i find with nr2003 is not related to my chip but still has same problem on other sigmatel chips. the only thing i can see is using a different driver other then what sigmatel supplies and force it into the chip if that’s possible.

    please help

    Guys,
I just got a new XPS M1710 with Vistal Home Premium and the SigmaTel card.
Even disabling All Enhancements, the sound is crackling, breaking up, and the it looks like the sound gets “slower” when it starts playing in Media Player, or any other sound sources.
I just adding my frustration to yours, but I am glad to see I am not alone :-)
I hope somebody finds a solution soon.

Same problem here with my new Dell M1730 … using SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC latest version 6.10.0.5609 from 09/07/2007 …
    Who can help?

A whole new motherboard … and a whole new M1730 (both recommanded by Dell) didn’t resolve the crackling sound …

  45. Salman Ali says:

I have been trying for close to a year for the solution to my audio problem with vista. I have a Gateway 835GM with a D945GBI motherboard, and I had tried everything under sun. I had HD Audio with 5.1 out with Windows XP, and when I got Vista Business everything went to hell and Microsoft’s driver only gave me a paltry stereo sound. Recently I was trying again and thought I would give it one last shot. I found the link up here put up by Ray.

Finally worked! Others with Gateway 835GM or otherwise, I’d give this a try. I downloaded the very first option (D20127-001-001.exe – WIndows Vista (32-bit or 64-bit) Sigmatel HD Audio Driver 6.10.5405.0).

    Good Luck!
